The owner of the iconic Las Vegas restaurant Heart Attack Grill announced the business is closing, blaming the rising operational costs and what he describes as the decline of downtown Las Vegas.
The restaurant became nationally known for its hospital-themed branding and extremely high calorie menu items. Jon Basso, the owner said that inflation, falling tourism traffic and growing business expenses made operations increasingly difficult.
Heart Attack Grill opened in Las Vegas in 2011 after originally launching in Arizona. The restaurant gained viral attention for its “Bypass Burgers,” waitresses dressed as nurses, customers wearing hospital gowns and free meals for customers over 350 pounds. Some menu items reportedly contained more than 10,000 calories.

Basso blamed rising food costs, labor expenses, insurance, utilities and declining foot traffic in downtown Las Vegas. He argued that smaller independent businesses are struggling to survive in the current economic environment. Basso also criticized broader changes in the city, saying Las Vegas has become harder for local businesses to operate in.
The restaurant was frequently criticized for promoting unhealthy eating habits. Heart Attack Grill became controversial after several customers reportedly suffered medical emergencies while dining there over the years. Critics accused the business of turning serious health issues into entertainment, while supporters viewed it as a satire and personal choice.
Downtown Las Vegas businesses have faced increasing pressure from inflation, tourism fluctuations, rising rents and labor shortages. Some business owners say visitor spending patterns have shifted toward large entertainment venues and casino owned establishments. Independent restaurants and novelty attractions have reportedly struggled with post-pandemic recovery.

News of the closure sparked strong reactions online. Supporters called Heart Attack Grill a “Vegas institution” and praised its unique identity and humor. Critics said the restaurant’s controversial branding overshadowed concerns about public health and obesity.
Heart Attack Grill become one of the most recognizable novelty restaurants in the United States. The restaurant appeared in television programs, documentaries, travel shows and viral social media content. Its over-the-top branding helped make it a well-known tourist attraction on Fermont Street.
The closure of Heart Attack Grill reflects the growing challenges faced by independent entertainment focused restaurants in tourist heavy cities like Las Vegas. Even as the restaurant shuts down, its unusual concept and controversial reputation are likely to remain part of Las Vegas pop culture history.
