A shooting at a McDonald’s in Lodi, California, left an employee injured Monday morning and the suspect dead after an officer-involved shooting. The incident occurred at the restaurant at 200 W. Lodi Ave., near the intersection of West Lodi Avenue and Church Street.
The Lodi Police Department received a report at about 9:30 a.m. of an armed person inside the restaurant who was allegedly threatening employees. When officers arrived, they heard gunfire and screaming coming from inside, police said. Officers entered the restaurant and encountered the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Jonhatan Anguiano. An officer-involved shooting followed, and Anguiano was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said an employee had been shot before officers arrived. The employee was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition, according to authorities. No police officers were reported injured, and officials said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
The incident also left customers in the drive-through trapped as police surrounded the restaurant. Cheryl Steneck, a customer who was waiting in the drive-through, told CBS News that she saw the first officer exit his vehicle and draw his gun behind the car door. An employee then told her that someone inside the restaurant had a gun.

Steneck said she was unable to leave because a vehicle was in front of her and police vehicles were behind and around her. She added, “I didn’t know who was getting shot and I was really, really scared for the girl that I was talking with in the drive-through because she’s in the back, she’s stuck.”
Steneck said she remained in her vehicle until police directed the cars in the drive-through out one at a time. Other nearby businesses also reported seeing a heavy police presence as authorities secured the area.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting and the suspect’s motive remain under investigation. The case is being investigated under the San Joaquin County Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol, involving the Lodi Police Department, San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office and California Department of Justice.
