President Donald Trump has renewed his promise to give every adult U.S. citizen a $5,000 payment if Republicans win control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections.
In an Oct. 3 post on X, Trump wrote that if Republicans win the House of Representatives and Senate, he would give “all Adult Citizens in the United States of America, $5,000,” adding that he looked forward to “signing those checks.”

Trump first announced the proposal, which he has called the “Trump Dividend,” at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas in September. He said the payment would be possible because of what he described as strong economic performance and substantial tariff revenue.
The proposal could carry a price tag of roughly $1.2 trillion. Estimates based on about 240 million adult U.S. citizens put the potential cost at that level.
However, the payment is not currently an approved federal program. Trump has not provided a detailed mechanism for distributing the money, and questions remain about the congressional authorization, funding and fiscal impact required to implement it. House Speaker Mike Johnson has previously indicated that Congress would need to be involved.

Trump’s renewed pledge comes as Republicans and Democrats campaign for the November 3 midterm elections, with control of both chambers at stake. AP reported that Trump has been using the $5,000 proposal as part of his effort to boost Republican turnout.
