Amazon has cut about 250 jobs in its devices and services unit as the company seeks to improve operational efficiency and align its workforce with product priorities. The layoffs follow a series of recent hardware launches.
The job cuts were announced Wednesday and primarily affect software development roles, Reuters reported. “We’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles,” an Amazon spokesperson said, adding that the changes would help the company operate more efficiently and better align its workforce with its product roadmap.

The reductions come after several weeks of product launches by the tech giant, including new Kindle e-readers and tablet computers. On Wednesday, Amazon also introduced a new Alexa-powered alarm clock and photo frame.
In an internal message to employees, Cherie Robinson, a human resources vice president in Amazon’s devices and services division, said a thorough review of the unit’s structure had led to the decision to reduce staff. Employees were notified through text messages and emails early Wednesday. The company did not specify how the latest cuts would affect individual products or future development plans.
The latest layoffs follow Amazon’s decision earlier this month to eliminate about 1,000 jobs in its core retail division.
Amazon has been investing in consumer hardware and digital services as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its ecosystem of connected services. The company is scheduled to report its third-quarter financial results after the U.S. stock market closes Thursday, with investors watching its performance across various business segments.
Meanwhile, Amazon continues to reorganize teams, manage costs and adjust its business structure.
