WASHINGTON, DC: Two teams of students from the M.H. Saboo Siddik College of Engineering in Mumbai triumphed at the SAE Aero Design West competition, which took place from April 28-30 in Fort Worth, Texas.
One group of students claimed the first place prize in the Micro Class category of the competition, while the other group placed fifth in the Advanced Class category. Both teams dubbed themselves “Team Aerosouls,” with only a Micro designation telling one team apart from the other.
While neither team won an award in the Elliott and Dorothy Green Overall Regular Class category, the team that placed first in the Micro Class received a $1,000 cash prize for their work.
That team comprised of faculty sponsor Sanjay Kumar, and students Darpan Agarwal, Adith Ajayan, Sarang Biradar, Afsan Gujarati, Imran Merchant, Abdul Kadir Poonawala, Muzammil Sarkhot, and Hussain Shaikh, according to IANS. These students are all studying automobile engineering at the Saboo Siddik College of Engineering.
The Advanced Class team was led by faculty sponsor Dilip Talwai, and featured students Zameer Ansari, Harshad Bhanushali, Faheem Chaudhary, Mustafa Hathiyari, Atharva Joshi,Shehzaad Kerawalla, Asma Khan, Abdul Karim Sarang, Hanif Shaikh, Shaziya Shaikh, Manish Shukla, and Saqlain Siddique. These students are all studying either mechanical or electrical engineering, reports IANS.
The purpose of the SAE Aero Design competition is to “provide undergraduate and graduate engineering students with a real-life engineering challenge,” according to the competition’s website. Contestants do this by designing small aeroplanes that are built to specific guidlines put out by the contest. These planes are divided into categories based on size and complexity, and are put to the test to see how well they operate.
Teams this year came from all over the world, including several from India. Although they did not field any winning teams, several of the most prestigious schools in India made an appearance, including: Hindustan University, IIT Kanpur, Manipal Institute of Technology, PES School of Technology, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, and Vellore Institute of Technology.
