Devices run on HIVE operating system. By Dileep Thekkethil
BENGALURU: Xolo, a subsidiary of the Indian smartphone manufacturer Lava, has launched a new smartphone series called Omega, with price starting at Rs. 8,999 ($145).
The new Omega series has two different smartphones, Omega 5.0 and Omega 5.5. Both have almost similar specifications. The key differences are in the camera department and battery.
Omega 5.5 has a 13 MP primary camera whereas 5.0 has only an 8.0 MP. The primary cameras come with Sony Exmor sensor, giving sharp image quality. The devices also have 2 MP front cameras for selfies and video conferencing. While Omega 5.0 sports a 2100 mAh battery, the Omega 5.5 has a longer lasting 2,600 mAh.
Both handsets have HC IPS touchscreen display and are powered by a 1.4 GHz Octa-core processor coupled with 1 GB RAM. The devices also have Quad-Core 600MHz Mali 450 accelerator to improve the speed of graphic rendering.
A major feature that differentiates Omega smartphones from rival devices is its operating system. Both the smartphones run on the HIVE platform, which is proprietary mobile operating system of XOLO.
XOLO has partnered with Vodafone providing 500MB free data for Omega 5.0 customers and 1 GB data for Omega 5.5, for a period of two months.
However, there are worries regarding the success of Omega series with the entry of the Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi. The new Redmi Note is a far better device compared to Omega and it comes with the same price tag.
Lava is the third largest Indian smartphone manufacturer, behind Micromax and Karbonn.
