WASHINGTON, DC: ‘Tashi and the Monk’, a documentary based in Arunachal Pradesh, directed by Johnny Burke and Andrew Hinton, won the Best Short and the Pare Lorentz Award at the International Documentary Association’s (IDA) Documentary Awards, presented in Los Angeles last week.

‘Tashi and the Monk’ is a story of love and redemption told through the relationship of Buddhist monk Lobsang Phuntsok and his five-year-old charge Tashi Drolma.
Lobsang was trained under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, but eight years ago he left behind a life as a spiritual teacher in the United States to create a unique community in the foothills of the Himalayas which rescues orphaned and neglected children. The film’s core is the arrival of Tashi to the community. Her mother recently passed away and she’s been abandoned by her alcoholic father. Wild and troubled, Tashi struggles to find her place amongst 84 new siblings.
Laura Poitras’ Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour took the top honor, the best feature award, and actor Robert Redford was bestowed the career achievement award, reported Hollywood Reporter.
Three new series awards were also unveiled at the event with the OWN program Our America With Lisa Ling receiving the IDA’s inaugural best episodic series award; NPR’s multiplatform series Planet Money Makes a T-Shirt receiving the first best short-form series award; and ITVS’ doc showcase Independent Lens receiving the new curated series award. The best limited series honor went to Showtime’s Time of Death.
