WASHINGTON, DC: Texas A&M engineering student, Akshay Jain, 22, sustained traumatic brain injuries when his car collided with a pick-up truck in Texas when he and four friends were returning home after Thanksgiving break in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 30.
While his four friends were released from the hospital soon after being treated for their injuries, Jain has undergone a series of surgeries and therapies after which he still remains in a vegetative state, his family told the Press trust of India.
If he ever comes to, Jain may have lasting problems with his movement, learning, or speaking, his family lamented to the Deccan Herald.
After his treatment at the rehabilitation centre is completed, Jain will be moved to a nursing home where only 15-20 days of coverage is available and then family plans to take him back to India if he remains unable to go back to school and finish his studies.
With Jain’s medical insurance expiring in August, the family has set up an online fundraiser at YouCaring.com to help cover costs of long-term care.
Consul General of India in Houston Parvataneni Harish visits Jain at the rehab every week to make sure everything is being taken care of and that his mother, who speaks only Hindi, does not faces any linguistic issues, according to the Herald.
Jain graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, in 2014. He moved to United States to pursue a Ph.D. in chemical engineering soon after his graduation.
“We have been told by university that if required, they can explore [the] possibility to extend his visa and insurance for one more year after Aug. 15 2015, but this is something not confirmed,†stated Jain’s brother-in-law, Gagan Parakh.
The American Bazaar had earlier reported that Texas A&M Senior Kavita Sinha helped jain and the other four students cope with their medical bills by starting a fundraising drive.
Apart from Jain, Pranan Kannan, Chiranjibi Boere, Shachit Iyer and Kishan Bajaj had all come from India to study engineering at Texas A&M.
