“Medium resolution images, music & audio podcasts should work with the current generation Starlink direct-to-phone constellation. Next generation constellation will do medium resolution video”

In an unexpected development today, Apple has integrated Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network into their latest iPhone update. This allows iPhone users to use SpaceX’s Starlink as an alternative to Apple’s previous satellite service Globestar.
The iOS 18.3 update is rolling out now, and it brings Starlink connectivity to a select group of iPhone users in the U.S. with the service being offered through T-Mobile. At present, this is available only to U.S. users. The service is also still in its beta version, and can only be used to send text messages. However, Apple has indicated that other services like voice calls and data connections would be available in future updates.

The newest development would help users access services in places without regular network coverage, or where network coverage is spotty. However, the update also poses a challenge to Apple’s existing partnership with Globestar.
While Globestar and Starlink both provide satellite connectivity, they differ in how they work. One distinct advantage Starlink has over Globestar is that users don’t need to point their iPhones at the sky like they do with Globalstar. Instead, Starlink connects automatically in the background.
Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX, said in an X post, “Medium resolution images, music & audio podcasts should work with the current generation Starlink direct-to-phone constellation. Next generation constellation will do medium resolution video.”
This partnership between Apple and SpaceX has substantial implications. It indicates that Apple is now willing to diversify its satellite options, making satellite services more accessible, especially in remote areas, or during emergency situations.

T-Mobile had invited users to participate in beta test signups for its Starlink satellite cell service back in December 2024. These users are now able to receive texts, with iPhone users receiving a message asking them to “update to iOS 18.3” to “start experiencing coverage beyond.” Once they do download the update, they’ll see a toggle in their cellular data settings to activate the capability.
At present, this service is available only in the U.S., and it is not certain when it would expand to other countries.
