The Ivy League university’s endowment is going big on tech investments. Reportedly, the Harvard Management Company (HMC) increased its exposure to Big Tech in its directly held stock portfolio during the final months of 2024, adding new positions in Apple, Amazon, Tesla, and Microsoft while reinforcing its already substantial investment in Meta.
The move signals a strong investment in the “Magnificent Seven,” a group of tech giants— including Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, Tesla—that have been key drivers of stock market growth in recent years.

HMC is a nonprofit organization that manages the endowment and assets of Harvard University. Their primary job is to invest the university’s funds to grow its financial resources, which support scholarships, research, and other university programs. HMC invests in a variety of assets, such as stocks, real estate, and private equity, with the goal of generating long-term returns.
Founded in 1974, HMC helps ensure that Harvard remains financially strong, allowing the university to provide quality education and fund important projects. The company’s investment strategies aim to balance risk and reward, seeking to make the most of Harvard’s money while protecting it from big losses.
HMC is important because the university’s endowment plays a significant role in keeping tuition costs down and providing financial aid to students. It’s one of the largest university endowments in the world.
The change reportedly happened because Harvard’s public stocks portfolio reached $1.69 billion at the end of 2024. This is a little lower than the $1.73 billion from the previous quarter, but it’s still 42% higher than the $1.19 billion it was a year ago.
On the positive side, successful investments in tech companies could significantly boost Harvard’s endowment, supporting scholarships and university projects. On the downside, heavy reliance on tech investments might make the university’s finances more vulnerable to downturns in the tech industry, potentially impacting its long-term financial stability.
