After President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk made their support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party quite apparent, it seems the newly-elected Chancellor Friedrich Merz had his own feelings to share after the victory of his centre-right alliance on Monday.
Reportedly, Merz, who faces complex negotiations with his party’s traditional centre-left rival to form a coalition government after ruling out the second-placed hard-right AfD, said on Sunday that it would be his “absolute priority” to strengthen Europe so it does not have to rely on Washington for its defence.

“I never thought I would have to say something like that on a TV programme, but after Donald Trump’s latest comments in the last week, it is clear that the Americans, or at least this portion of the Americans, this government, care very little about the fate of Europe,” the chancellor-in-waiting reportedly told a televised roundtable of political leaders.
As of mid-2022, the United States maintained approximately 100,000 military personnel across Europe, with a significant portion stationed in Germany. In August 2024, the U.S. approved a potential sale of up to 600 Patriot air defense missiles to Germany, valued at an estimated $5 billion. While Germany is a major global economy, it still receives U.S. foreign assistance, averaging $15 million annually in recent years.
Germany to be rid of U.S. influence, would mean that these deals would be impacted eventually.
Reducing dependence on U.S. military support may require Germany to significantly increase its defense spending and capabilities. This could involve developing indigenous defense systems and expanding its military forces.
The U.S. is a key trading partner for Germany, absorbing 10% of German exports in 2023, valued at $157.9 billion.Pursuing an independent path might necessitate diversifying trade relationships and could impact existing economic ties.
While the newly-elected Chancellor’s intentions aim to bolster national sovereignty, the transition towards reduced U.S. influence will require careful navigation of defense, economic, and diplomatic landscapes.

Merz is known for his conservative views, advocating for free-market policies, economic growth, and a stronger role for Germany in Europe.
