Elon Musk’s closeness with President Donald Trump may prove lucrative for him yet again. Musk’s SpaceX and two partners have emerged as frontrunners to win a crucial part of President Donald Trump’s “Golden Dome” missile defense shield, six people familiar with the matter said, according to Reuters.
In his executive order on Jan. 27, Trump cited a missile attack as “the most catastrophic threat facing the United States.”
What is the “Golden Dome”?
The “Golden Dome” is a proposed U.S. missile defense initiative announced by former President Trump in early 2025. Inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome and Ronald Reagan’s 1980s “Star Wars” program, the Golden Dome aims to create a next-generation missile shield to defend the United States from ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missile threats.

Unlike traditional systems, this project heavily emphasizes space-based technology, including satellite constellations for early detection and armed satellites capable of intercepting threats mid-flight. Musk’s Spacex, in collaboration with Palantir and Anduril, is a leading contender to develop key parts of the system. Their model includes a private subscription-based system, raising concerns about military control and public oversight.
The Pentagon is currently evaluating over 360 defense contractor proposals, with major players like Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Northrop Grumman also involved. While still in early development, the Golden Dome represents a significant shift toward integrating commercial tech and AI-driven defense systems into national security infrastructure.

The project has sparked debate over costs, feasibility, and space militarization, but Trump has framed it as essential to maintaining U.S. dominance and deterrence in a rapidly evolving global threat landscape. The system is still in the planning and research phase.
Despite the Pentagon’s positive signals to the SpaceX group, some sources stressed the decision process for Trump’s Golden Dome is in its early stages. Its ultimate structure and who is selected to work on it could change dramatically in the coming months.
