President Donald Trump is gearing up to go after the homeless population in the country’s capital. Trump has raised concerns about public safety in the city, teasing a plan that would also target its homeless population.
“I’m going to make our Capital safer and more beautiful than it ever was before,” Trump said on Truth Social on Aug. 10. “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital.”
The homeless population in Washington, D.C., remains a significant social challenge despite ongoing efforts to address it. As of recent data, approximately 5,000 to 6,000 individuals experience homelessness on any given night in the city. This number fluctuates based on factors such as seasonal changes, economic conditions, and the availability of services. The population includes a diverse mix of individuals—families, single adults, veterans, and youth—each facing unique challenges.
Key contributors to homelessness in D.C. include a shortage of affordable housing, unemployment, mental health issues, and substance abuse. The city’s high cost of living exacerbates these issues, making it difficult for many residents to maintain stable housing. Additionally, systemic factors such as racial disparities and gaps in social services contribute to the persistence of homelessness.

The District has implemented various programs aimed at reducing homelessness such as emergency shelters, rapid rehousing initiatives, and supportive housing programs that provide both housing and wraparound services. Nonprofits and government agencies collaborate to provide food, healthcare, and job training to help individuals regain stability. While progress has been made, homelessness remains a complex problem requiring sustained investment, comprehensive policy approaches, and community engagement to create lasting solutions.
In a series of social media posts, Trump said he would unveil his initiative on Aug. 11, adding it would address the city’s crime and the “Cleanliness and the General Physical Renovation and Condition of our once beautiful and well maintained Capital.”
“Crime in Washington, D.C., is totally out of control,” Trump said on Aug. 5, adding: “If this continues, I am going to exert my powers, and FEDERALIZE this City.”
Violent crime has declined so far in 2025, according to police data. Homicides and robberies are down 12% and 28% respectively, while total violent crime is down 26% through Aug. 8 when compared with the same period in 2024.

While homelessness remains a complex challenge influenced by factors such as affordable housing shortages, mental health, and systemic inequalities, Trump’s proposed measures seem to unfairly target the homeless population with an emphasis on kicking them out of the city.
However, it’s important to note that official data shows violent crime in D.C. has actually declined significantly in 2025 with reductions in homicides, robberies, and overall violent offenses. This suggests that while concerns about safety are real, the situation may be improving.
Addressing homelessness effectively requires balanced solutions that combine compassion, support services, and community engagement rather than displacement alone. Sustainable progress depends on long-term investments in housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities alongside public safety initiatives to create a safer, healthier environment for all residents.
