New Yorkers watched Jenifer Rajkumar, The first Indian American woman elected to New York State Office, in new colors as she vowed her constituents at the “Style Across the Aisle” show.
For the inspiring event that unites New York’s fashion, civic, and cultural communities to spotlight emerging local designers last week, Rajkumar walked down the aisle in a stunning colorful number from the chic new designer Soara.
Rajkumar, who represents Queens neighbourhood in New York State assembly, embraced Soara for its innovative fashion that takes inspiration from the designers’ South Asian heritage, blending American and Indian styles, according to a media release.
Much like Rajkumar, Soara co-founder Surya Garg is the daughter of Indian American immigrants. The Assemblywoman named her dress rajkumari, Hindi for “princess,” to honor her regal commitment to service and the noble vibrancy of New York’s Indian American community.
Rajkumar said, “I walk the runway every day on the streets of New York, and this week I did it on a bigger stage. Just as fashion is about expressing identity and confidence, my role in public service is about empowering every New Yorker to stand tall and proud. My goal is a state where everyone walks a wide open runway to opportunity.”

”Style Across the Aisle” is a vibrant annual event during New York’s famed fashion week that bridges the worlds of fashion and politics. It showcases emerging designers as modeled by New York’s political elite from across the ideological spectrum.
The event celebrates community, small business, and the ability of fashion to bring together people from every walk of life. The event raised over $75,000 for charity.
