A major internet disruption sent users into a digital blackout on Tuesday, as a widespread Cloudflare outage disabled access to several popular platforms. Social media sites like X, AI chatbot services like ChatGPT, and film review platform Letterboxd were among those hit, displaying error messages citing Cloudflare’s technical failure as the reason pages could not load.
ChatGPT displayed the message, “Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed,” as users tried to access it during the outage.
“Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers,” the company said in an update quoted by Independent. “Further details will be provided as more information becomes available.”
Cloudflare plays a critical behind-the-scenes role in keeping the internet running smoothly. The company provides essential infrastructure that helps websites load quickly, remain secure, and withstand sudden surges in traffic. Its services protect platforms from cyber threats such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, while also ensuring that millions of users can access those sites without interruption.
