Samiksha Yadav, a freshman at Hillsdale College in Michigan, recently stood as a singular figure among a sea of seasoned experts in Bethesda, Maryland. At just 19 years old, the first-year student was the only undergraduate selected to present research at a workshop hosted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The April 14 event, titled “RNA as Cancer Drivers, Biomarkers and Therapeutics,” was organized by the National Cancer Institute. While the gathering featured 35 select researchers from top-tier institutions like Yale, Harvard, and the NCI, Yadav’s presence signaled a remarkable early start to a promising scientific career. Her work focused on the intricacies of hereditary breast cancers, a field she began exploring long before arriving in Michigan.
Humanizing the high-stakes world of oncology research, Yadav expressed a sense of both accomplishment and momentum following the session. “The meeting went really well, and I also got to meet professors from Yale, Harvard, and NCI,” Yadav said.
Far from being intimidated by the academic hierarchy, she is already eyeing the next phase of her work, noting her plans to implement a new approach to her study of cancer genetics in the near future.

Yadav’s journey to the NIH began in India, where her academic trajectory moved at an accelerated pace. While still in high school, she balanced dual-enrollment college courses with part-time research in genetics.
Her dedication led to a historic milestone, becoming the youngest researcher to have work published at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. This foundation in India’s rigorous academic environment provided the springboard for her current successes in the United States.
Her momentum has only increased since joining Hillsdale. Last semester, her research abstract was accepted by Brown University’s Student Neurosurgery & Neurology Research Conference.
This month, she is slated to present at Stanford University’s 13th Annual Neuroscience Forum. Both events are typically reserved for medical school students, further highlighting Yadav’s unique position in the undergraduate community.

Hillsdale College, an independent liberal arts institution in southern Michigan, has provided the backdrop for Yadav’s transition into American academia.
