The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to begin June 11 across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with 48 nations competing in 16 host stadiums across the three countries. Soccer fans attending the tournament will face strict security measures and several restrictions on what they can bring into stadiums.
Here are five things that are strictly prohibited:
Bags and backpacks
Bags and backpacks of all types are prohibited, except for small clear plastic bags, including one-gallon freezer bags up to 11-by-11 inches or clear PVC bags up to 12-by-12-by-6 inches. Small non-clear wallets no larger than 6.5-by-4.5 inches are also permitted. Backpacks, purses and tote bags will be turned away.

Food and drinks
Outside food and beverages are not permitted inside World Cup stadiums, including bottled water, cans, glass bottles, coolers and packed meals. Fans may bring one empty clear plastic bottle with a capacity of up to one liter to refill at water stations inside the venue.
Smoking and vaping products
Smoking, vaping and the use of tobacco products or electronic smoking devices are prohibited inside stadiums, including the inner and outer perimeter areas. Lighters and matches are also banned. Some venues may offer designated outdoor smoking areas, according to FIFA. Fans should also note that bringing e-cigarettes and vaping devices into Mexico is illegal, and possession of multiple devices can result in heavy fines or jail time.
Shane Margereson, a vape expert at ecigone, said: “If you’re heading to a World Cup game in the US, Canada or especially Mexico, leave the vape at home. In the US and Canada they’ll be confiscated at the gate. But Mexico is a different story altogether. It’s now illegal to even bring a vape into the country, the State Department has warned travelers directly, and customs are scanning bags for batteries.
“If you rely on vaping to stay off cigarettes, plan ahead. Nicotine pouches are still legal in Mexico and are a simple, low-key way to manage cravings on the trip, and nicotine gum or patches work too. Just don’t risk taking a vape across the border.”
Umbrellas and portable seating
Umbrellas of all sizes are prohibited because they may be used as weapons or obstruct views. Portable chairs, folding chairs, seat cushions with zippers or pockets, and strollers are also banned. However, flat seat cushions without pockets are generally allowed.

Noise devices and pyrotechnics
FIFA has banned “excessive noise instruments,” including vuvuzelas, air horns and bullhorns. Pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited, and bringing them into a stadium is considered a criminal offense in all three host countries. Fans caught with pyrotechnics could face ejection, arrest and prosecution under local explosives or disorderly conduct laws. Laser pointers, aerosols and objects that could be thrown onto the field are also prohibited.
Items permitted inside stadiums include cellphones, wallets, eyeglasses, watches, sunscreen, hats and small flags less than two meters wide without flagpoles. Essential medication is also allowed with appropriate prescription documentation.
