The State University of New York Board of Trustees has named University at Buffalo President Satish K. Tripathi as President Emeritus and University Professor in recognition of his 22 years of leadership at New York’s flagship institution.
The board recognized the Indian American educationist with a resolution at a recent meeting in Albany, celebrating Tripathi’s lengthy tenure at UB, which included serving as the university’s provost before his appointment as its 15th president in 2011.
Tripathi’s journey to the leadership of a premier American public research university began in India, where he completed his early foundational higher education. He graduated top of his class from Banaras Hindu University, earning both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in statistics. He later moved to North America to pursue advanced graduate studies, eventually earning a doctorate in computer science from the University of Toronto.

During the Albany session, SUNY leaders praised Tripathi’s career for elevating the university’s academic standards, research capabilities, and physical infrastructure, while overseeing historic philanthropic growth and campus facility expansions.
SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. lauded three specific leadership qualities displayed by Tripathi, team building, respect, and partnerships. King specifically pointed to UB’s prominent role as a member of New York State’s Empire AI consortium, which features an artificial intelligence computing center housed on the Buffalo campus, as evidence of Tripathi’s belief that public higher education must drive regional economic development and the collective pursuit of knowledge.

He emphasized that the university’s progress was the result of a shared purpose and collective effort alongside faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners.
Tripathi expressed his gratitude to the board and Chancellor King for their sustained support, calling his service to the State University of New York system the privilege of a lifetime.
