The heavy scent of ripe Indian mangos is about to take over a corner of Manhattan on Tuesday for the locals and homesick immigrants to experience the taste of a true South Asian summer.
The Consulate General of India in New York will host the Indian Mango Festival at the Time Out Market in Union Square, New York, from noon to 5 p.m. local time on June 23. The promotional event offers New Yorkers a rare chance to sample Kesar and Langra mangoes, the two most special varieties of mangos shipped directly from India and harvested at peak ripeness.
The organizers called the gathering a celebration of the “King of Fruits,” according to their social media post.

On social media pages promoting the festival, immigrant communities flooded the comment sections, where several users expressed their excitement and nostalgia as a “generational New York summer,” while other local mango lovers eagerly requested similar tasting events in other major cities across the United States as well.
The festival takes place at a time of unprecedented growth for Indian agricultural trade. According to the data from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, India’s mango exports expanded to more than 45 countries this season. Notably, total shipments to the U.S. have already broken last year’s records, even before the summer export window closes.
To maintain this momentum, Indian diplomatic missions and trade agencies have escalated their promotional efforts across the country. The Manhattan tasting follows a similar showcase held earlier this month in Seattle, which successfully connected Indian farmers with Pacific Northwest distributors, supermarkets, and everyday consumers.

India remains the undisputed global leader in mango production, yielding more than 26 million metric tons annually across 1,000 distinct varieties. The two varieties being showcased in New York represents the pinnacle of the country’s premium export market. The Kesar variety is globally famous for its intense sweetness and vibrant, saffron-colored pulp, while the Langra variety is celebrated for its distinctively sharp aroma and tender texture.
With lines of New Yorkers expected to stretch through markets across the city, the event will demonstrate how agricultural diplomacy can double as a powerful cultural touchstone, transforming a simple trade push into a vibrant community celebration.
