The Pentagon has asked Congress for an additional $80 billion in funding as military expenditures linked to the conflict with Iran continues to rise, according to U.S. officials familiar with the request.
The funding proposal comes amid growing costs associated with American military operations in the Middle East following weeks of heightened tensions and military engagement involving U.S. and Iranian forces. Defense officials said the additional money would help replenish weapons stockpiles, support ongoing deployments and maintain military readiness across multiple regions.
According to the request, a significant portion of the funding would be used to replace missiles, precision-guided munitions and air-defense interceptors that have been used during operations connected to the conflict. The Pentagon has also cited increased transportation, logistics and personnel costs resulting from the deployment of additional troops and military assets to the region.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers that maintaining operational readiness remains a priority as the United States continues to respond to evolving security threats. Pentagon officials have warned that extended military operations place pressure on existing inventories and require additional funding to sustain capabilities.
The request arrives as Congress debates broader defense spending priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. Some lawmakers have expressed support for the supplemental funding, arguing that the military must have the resources necessary to protect U.S. personnel and interests overseas. Others have called for greater scrutiny of the costs associated with the conflict and have sought more detailed explanations of how the funds would be used.
The United States has expanded its military presence in the Middle East since the outbreak of hostilities with Iran. Additional naval assets, fighter aircraft and air-defense systems have been deployed to the region as Washington seeks to protect shipping routes, military bases and allied nations from potential attacks.
Military officials have also pointed to the need to replenish stockpiles following operations conducted in support of regional security and maritime protection efforts. Modern precision-guided weapons can be costly to replace, particularly when used in sustained military campaigns.

The funding request comes as President Donald Trump continues to pursue diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions with Tehran. While administration officials have expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations, military planners have emphasized the need to prepare for a range of possible scenarios.
Congress is expected to review the request in the coming weeks as lawmakers consider supplemental appropriations measures. The debate is likely to focus on both the immediate costs of military operations and the long-term implications of U.S. involvement in the region.
If approved, the additional funding would represent one of the largest supplemental defense requests tied to a Middle East conflict in recent years.
