Washington University School of Medicine has awarded Dr. Ramaswamy Govindan 2026 Dean’s Medal for Clinical Excellence, recognizing his contributions to thoracic oncology and compassionate patient care.
As the Anheuser-Busch Endowed Chair of Medical Oncology, Govindan has spent nearly three decades at the St. Louis institution treating primary and metastatic lung cancer.
The annual accolade, established to celebrate leaders whose career achievements advance medicine, honors his clinical service alongside research that has influenced the treatment of thoracic cancers.
Govindan’s journey in medicine began in India, where he grew up and completed his foundational education. He completed his secondary education at Sir M.Ct.M. Higher Secondary School in Madras (now Chennai) before earning his medical degree from the University of Madras in 1987.
To pursue specialized medical training, he completed an internal medicine residency at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry. These early formative years in India laid the groundwork for his extensive academic and clinical career.
After moving to the United States, Govindan completed an internal medicine residency at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago. He later relocated to Missouri for a specialized fellowship in hematology and oncology at Washington University School of Medicine, joining the university’s medical faculty permanently in 1998.
At the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, based at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and WashU Medicine, Govindan treats patients with lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma, and esophageal cancer.
Beyond his research, which includes serving as the co-chair of the lung cancer group for the national Cancer Genome Atlas project and leading the nationwide ALCHEMIST trial, he is recognized locally for his compassionate bedside manner.

University leadership also noted his dedication to remaining accessible to patients and their families outside of standard clinic hours to help navigate difficult diagnoses.
His current clinical practice focuses on precision medicine, where he utilizes advanced molecular genomic testing to design individualized treatment plans tailored to specific tumor types.
For patients who do not respond to standard, first-line therapies, Govindan works to provide cutting-edge investigational therapies and clinical trials, offering ongoing options in complex clinical situations.
In addition to his clinical practice and research roles, Govindan serves as the Associate Chief of the Division of Oncology and the Associate Director of Translational Research at the Siteman Cancer Center.
The Dean’s Medal honors his multi-faceted impact on the institution, recognizing a career spent linking laboratory developments directly to patient care.
