FIFA has launched a disciplinary investigation into the violent scenes that erupted after Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, following a series of confrontations involving players and coaching staff from both teams.
Spain secured its second men’s World Cup title on July 19 at New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) thanks to Ferran Torres’ goal in the 106th minute. However, celebrations were overshadowed by chaotic post-match scenes after tensions spilled over at the final whistle.
According to ESPN, footage from the incident appeared to show Argentina defenders Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina hitting Spain’s Eric García and Rodri during the confrontation. Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also seen apparently striking Dani Olmo, while Molina later confronted Rodri, who was also involved in a heated verbal exchange with former Manchester City teammate Nicolás Otamendi.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni and several players intervened in an attempt to calm the situation as both squads became embroiled in the altercation.
The match had already been marked by controversy after Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off in stoppage time for a foul on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí, becoming the first player to receive a red card in a men’s World Cup final since Netherlands defender John Heitinga was dismissed against Spain in the 2010 final.
In a statement, FIFA confirmed it has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to examine the incidents.

“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code with regard to the post-match incidents,” the statement said.
FIFA added that further details will be released once the prosecutor’s report has been completed.
The investigation could lead to disciplinary action against players or officials found to have breached FIFA’s disciplinary regulations.
