Elon Musk has revealed a tentative launch timeline for the next two versions of xAI’s Grok artificial intelligence model, saying Grok 4.6 is expected around August 7, 2026, and a significantly larger Grok 4.7 model will follow a few weeks later.
Musk shared the timeline in a post on X, saying Grok 4.6 will be a 1.5 trillion-parameter model with improvements to supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning.
“Interesting. Grok 4.6 releases around August 7. This will be the 1.5T model with significantly improved SFT & RL,” Musk wrote.
He said Grok 4.7 will be a 2.1 trillion-parameter model and will arrive “a few weeks later.”
“Grok 4.7 will be the 2.1T model released a few weeks later. This will be better than 4.6 in every way, except slightly slower to serve, albeit with even better token efficiency,” Musk said.

Musk’s post indicates that Grok 4.6 will focus on improvements to the model’s post-training processes. SFT, or supervised fine-tuning, involves training a model using curated examples, while reinforcement learning is used to optimize model behaviour based on feedback or defined objectives.
The larger Grok 4.7 model, meanwhile, is expected to increase the model’s parameter count to 2.1 trillion, compared with 1.5 trillion parameters for Grok 4.6. Musk said the larger model would be slower to serve, but would offer improved token efficiency.
Parameter count is one measure of the scale of an AI model, although a higher number does not automatically translate into better performance across every task. The architecture of a model, training data, post-training techniques and inference efficiency also influence how effectively an AI system performs.
The launch timeline comes as xAI continues to compete with major AI companies, including OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. The rapid development cycle has seen leading AI companies increasingly focus not only on model size but also on reasoning, coding, efficiency and the cost of serving models to users.
Musk’s announcement does not provide a specific release date for Grok 4.7, saying only that it is expected a few weeks after Grok 4.6. The timelines also remain subject to change.

The announcement highlights xAI’s strategy of rapidly iterating on its flagship AI models. If the schedule holds, the company could release two successive Grok versions within a matter of weeks, giving users and developers access to updated capabilities quickly.
The focus on token efficiency in Musk’s comments also reflects a broader industry effort to make increasingly powerful AI models less expensive and resource-intensive to operate. Better efficiency can potentially reduce the computing resources required to process large volumes of requests.
For xAI, the upcoming releases will provide another test of its ability to compete in an increasingly crowded AI market. Grok 4.6 is expected to arrive first, followed by the larger Grok 4.7 model, which Musk says will offer improvements across the board while trading some serving speed for greater efficiency.
The company has yet to provide a detailed public release schedule or independently verified performance benchmarks for either model.
