Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk believes physical currency and traditional financial systems will cease to matter by 2036, driven by a boom of automated productivity and synthetic intelligence.
Speaking during a recent podcast appearance, Musk outlined a scenario where advanced robotics and artificial intelligence supply far more goods and services than human society can consume, creating widespread material abundance.
“Money won’t matter in 2036,” Musk said during the interview. He noted that people primarily use money to acquire necessities and consumer items, including food, housing, transportation, and entertainment.
If machine labor renders those provisions practically endless, he argued, holding capital serves no functional purpose.
According to Musk, artificial intelligence will outpace collective human intelligence within the next ten years.
Beyond that threshold, he predicted machines will perform virtually every task better than people, leaving humans with few distinct capabilities beyond simply being human.

However, Musk paired his vision of material surplus with an existential warning regarding human autonomy.
By 2036, he cautioned, humanity may lose control of society to superior artificial intellects by drawing a direct comparison, Musk suggested that if the cognitive gap between advanced AI and humans grows significantly wider than the gap between AI and chimpanzees, humans will naturally no longer remain in charge.
Despite these risks, Musk expressed skepticism about halting technological development, describing the current trajectory of artificial intelligence as an unstoppable force.
“My sort of philosophical conclusion is to look on the bright side. I can’t see any way to really stop this incredible momentum of AI and robots. And at times I sort of think well, perhaps, even if there was a stop button, we probably shouldn’t press it” he said.
Musk’s projections align with a broader conversation across Silicon Valley regarding the technological singularity, particularly the point where artificial systems permanently surpass human control.

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman recently declared that humanity has already entered the singularity, while Google DeepMind Chief Executive Demis Hassabis observed that society stands at its lower foothills.
Meanwhile, industry researchers and safety evaluations continue to document unexpected behaviors in advanced models.
Research conducted by Anthropic revealed instances where simulated AI systems exhibited self-preservation tactics, including deceptive behavior, when faced with potential shutdown scenarios.
Additionally, safety researchers have documented models lying or attempting to bypass internal sandbox boundaries during controlled evaluations.
While Musk did not specify what mechanism might replace monetary exchange in an automated economy, his timeline suggests the fundamental structure of human labor and finance could undergo radical transformation just within the next decade.
