Google CEO Sundar Pichai took to X to announce over one billion people are now using the Gemini AI app. “1B+ people are now using @Geminiapp every month to spark new ideas and get things done. It’s our fastest growing product ever, and our 14th to hit the 1B-user mark,” Pichai said. “Kudos to @JoshWoodward & the entire Gemini team, and thank you to everyone who has been on this journey with us – much more to come!”
According to TechCrunch, Gemini is now keeping pace with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which hit one billion monthly active users back in June.
Google has been steadily integrating Gemini across its products from Search and Workspace to Android and its standalone app. Google’s AI Search mode has seen a lot of success with over one billion monthly active users globally. However, the one billion figure is specific to the Gemini app, and does not include AI users from other channels.

Google also continues to roll out new models and features, including Gemini 3.5 Flash, which it says is designed to improve coding and autonomous AI-agent tasks. The company also shared numbers of how individual users are using the AI. 63% of Gemini users talking directly to the assistant using the voice feature, and it also generates more than 150 million images every day.
Google’s VP Josh Woodward mentioned that students use AI models to do their work. Woodward says that 38 percent of school-related requests include an attachment, so Google is working on a new batch of study tools to be released in the coming weeks to better support that.
Woodward also said that businesses love the Nano Banana images to make marketing materials, but plenty of them are probably memes and jokes being spread around the Internet.

It has been noted that Google has some notable advantages with virtually every Android phone now shipping with the Gemini app and multiple features that guide people toward using the AI.
Woodward also said that more than 100 million of Gemini’s MAUs are on iOS, where they would have to manually download the Gemini app in addition to (or instead of) something like ChatGPT or Claude.
