A dramatic ocean rescue off the California coastline culminated in an Oval Office meeting Monday, where President Donald Trump hosted a teenage lifeguard and the young boy he saved from the surf.
The White House gathering brought together 16-year-old Ryder Williams, a California State Parks lifeguard, and 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, weeks after a footage of their encounter at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz circulated widely online.
The viral video captured the intense moments of the July 25 incident when Williams battled crashing waves to reach Nathaniel, who had lost his footing in shallow water and gone unconscious.

As heavy swells repeatedly submerged both boys, Williams held fast to Nathaniel until fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen assisted in bringing them safely back to shore.
The incident caught Trump’s attention online after his son, Eric Trump, shared the footage, prompting the president to announce on Truth Social that he would invite the group to Washington. Seated in front of the Oval Office fireplace, Trump marveled at the rescue.
“What you did was incredible, and everybody saw it,” Trump said, recalling his initial reaction to the footage. “When I first saw it, I said, ‘roll that back, I want to see that again.'”
Dressed in his black California State Parks lifeguard uniform, Williams credited his quick response to emergency preparation.
He explained that when faced with danger, guards rely on their rigorous practice routines to stay focused on retrieving swimmers from harm as quickly as possible.
Nathaniel, who wore a dark suit and maroon tie, sat on a couch alongside his father, Sumit, and sister, Layla. Trump praised the young boy’s composure during the life-threatening situation, telling him that his father was “the happiest man in the world.”
Trump also joked about the bravery required for such a rescue, calling Williams a “real hero” and telling Nathaniel, “I don’t know if I’d do it. I wouldn’t, probably. You’re lucky I wasn’t on the service that day.” The visit included an invitation from Trump to tour the historic Lincoln Bedroom.

When Williams shared his future goals of attending paramedic school and becoming a firefighter, Trump suggested the teenager could expect strong recommendations.
Bohnen, who works full-time as a firefighter and paramedic while continuing to train state park guards, attended the ceremony alongside Williams’ parents, Shane and Shannon.
Nathaniel’s father expressed deep gratitude for the guards, stating that what Williams did is something he could never repay.
