Indiana Gov. Mike Braun presented trailblazing Indian American IT executive Rupal Thanawala with the Sagamore of the Wabash, one of the state’s highest civilian honors. Presented on July 23, the distinction acknowledges her leadership, community devotion, and professional contributions across the Hoosier state.
Born in Mumbai, Thanawala became the first person in her family to attend college, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Mumbai University, where she was the program’s first female student.
Raised with deep cultural roots, she later emigrated to the United States with her husband, Amit, settling in Indiana in 1998, where they raised their two sons, Ninad and Rahil. She went on to expand her education by earning an Executive MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
