The Association of Indo Americans (AIA) hosted a special interactive session for youth with Satish Kumar Sivan, consul general of India in San Francisco, on Sept. 16 in Milpitas, California.
According to an AIA release, the session brought together middle school, high school and college students for an open discussion on culture, identity, community and opportunities for young Indian Americans.
The session gave students an opportunity to share their perspectives, ask questions and discuss how they navigate and embrace both Indian and American cultures, according to the release.
Sivan encouraged students to recognize the strengths of both cultures and discussed some of the challenges young people may face while balancing their cultural heritage with their lives in the U.S. The discussion also focused on ways to overcome those challenges and bridge cultural gaps.
Sivan also shared information about the role of the Consulate General of India in San Francisco and how it can support young people and strengthen connections between youth and the broader Indian-American community.

He encouraged students to remain open and curious about both cultures and said one of the best ways to learn about other places and cultures is by visiting them and spending time understanding and appreciating them.
“Engaging our youth and giving them a platform to share their voices is essential to building a stronger and more connected community,” the Association of Indo Americans team said.
“We deeply appreciate Consul General Sivan for spending valuable time with our young people, listening to them, and sharing his insights and encouragement,” the organization said. “These conversations can make a meaningful difference not only in the community, but also in the students’ homes, schools, and future careers.”

AIA said it plans to continue creating platforms that connect, empower and inspire the next generation while strengthening appreciation for Indian heritage and fostering greater understanding of the diverse communities where Indian Americans live and contribute.
The Association of Indo Americans describes itself as a coalition of more than 60 nonprofit organizations across the San Francisco Bay Area. The organization brings together Indian American organizations and community leaders to promote cultural engagement, community service, civic participation and stronger relationships with the broader community.
