Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan are making their presence felt in the Irish countryside.
Following their purchase of Strancally Castle in August, the couple has launched their first local philanthropic effort by gifting €150,000 to three neighboring Gaelic Athletic Association clubs.

The funding is split evenly among Shamrocks, Tallow, and Lismore GAA clubs in County Waterford, with each set to receive €50,000 disbursed over a two-year period.
Representatives from the organizations noted that the unexpected financial boost will significantly ease the constant burden of local fundraising.
The initiative began after Tallow GAA Treasurer Kieran Geary emailed potential contacts associated with the property purchase to pitch a future sponsorship.
Weeks later, club secretary Lyndsey Murphy received an unexpected phone call from Zuckerberg’s representatives to discuss the proposition.
“Initially we were a bit taken aback, was it actually legitimate?” Geary said. Following security checks and a subsequent Zoom conference, local organizers realized the outreach was authentic. Club leadership described the billionaire’s legal team as fantastic to deal with and easygoing.
Tallow GAA, founded in 1887, plans to channel its share into youth development programs before expanding adult teams, coaching setups, and upgrading a local community walkway to enhance accessibility.
Meanwhile, Shamrocks GAA, operating since 1953 across the combined parishes of Knockanore, Glendine, and Kilwatermoy with just over 200 members, initially met the news with skepticism. Secretary Tim Lenehan admitted he thought someone was pulling his leg before verifying the transaction.
“We are a very small club, so obviously fundraising is a hard issue enough because you are usually tapping up the same people all the time,” Lenehan said, noting that news of the windfall swept through the rural community quickly. Shamrocks intends to use the capital to modernize facilities like changing rooms and bolster its underage divisions.

At Lismore GAA, established in 1897, club secretary Emer Barry described the development as a mix of shock and disbelief.
Lismore plans to allocate its funds toward projects such as proposed floodlighting, new pitch-side fencing, and a community walkway.
While locals remain unsure whether the high-profile couple will become regular spectators on the sidelines, club representatives confirmed they are keeping the door open.
When asked if Zuckerberg might ever pull on a team jersey, Barry noted that the club is always open for players and that there is no parish rule in Waterford.
