The U.S. government has announced a 3.6% increase in Social Security benefits for 2027. According to the administration, this could offer millions of retirees and other beneficiaries’ additional monthly income as households continue to face higher living costs.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on Oct 14. The increase is expected to raise retirement benefits by an average of $75 per month. The higher payment will begin in Jan 2027. According to SSA, nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive adjustment and payments for about 7.3 million people receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will increase from Dec 31, 2026.

Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano said in a statement, “Social Security will implement this cost-of-living adjustment for 76 million Americans, giving them greater financial stability.”
The announced adjustment rate is higher than the 2.8% increase provided in 2026. As the price of housing, healthcare, food and other essentials is continuously rising, experts believe that the additional money may offer limited relief to elder citizens. According to AARP, about 40 percent of beneficiaries age 65 and older derive at least half of their income from Social Security.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, consumer prices rose 3.7% in Sep compared with a year earlier, up from 3.4% in August. One of the reasons for the increase is the continuously rising fuel price. Gasoline prices rose 34% from a year earlier, which is largely driven due to geopolitical tensions and ongoing U.S.-Iran war in the Middle East.
Social Security’s annual adjustment is designed to help beneficiaries maintain their purchasing power amid price rises. The calculation is based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). To determine the adjustment, government compares the index’s average for July, August and September with the corresponding period a year ago. The CPI-W rose 3.9% over the past 12 months; the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Wednesday.
The director of the advocacy group Senior Citizens League Shannon Benton said, “Seniors have spent years watching their expenses outpacing their benefits.”
“This provides a little breathing room but won’t undo the damage of what we’ve seen this decade,” he added.

The increase could also be partly offset by rising Medicare costs. The monthly Medicare Part B premium that covers outpatient medical service and is commonly deducted from Social Security payments is expected to rise to $209.50 in 2027. The actual effect on individual payments, hence, depends on benefit amounts and applicable deductions. Therefore, actual increase in what beneficiaries take-home will therefore vary.
