OpenAI has secured $11 billion in fresh funding as part of a larger investment round that values the company at $1.25 trillion, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The amount raised so far is below OpenAI’s initial target of up to $30 billion. The company’s valuation has also dropped from the $1.5 trillion it had initially aimed for, two investors told Reuters on Friday.
SoftBank and MGX are among the investors participating in the funding round, according to the investors. Bloomberg News first reported the latest development.
The $11 billion investment is only the first part of a larger funding round, which is yet to close. The round could reach approximately $20 billion and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

In September, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was seeking to raise as much as $30 billion at a valuation of $1.4 trillion. The latest figures suggest that the company may fall short of its original fundraising goal.
The development comes at a time when investor confidence in the artificial intelligence sector has begun to weaken. Expectations surrounding AI companies have cooled over the past month, with investors also lowering their valuation estimates for rival Anthropic ahead of its planned initial public offering (IPO).
Anthropic’s potential IPO valuation is now estimated at around $1.5 trillion, down from earlier expectations of nearly $2 trillion, according to Reuters.
Political developments in the United States have added to concerns about the sector. The Democratic Party’s strong performance in the midterm elections, along with growing voter opposition to data center expansion, has unsettled technology investors.
The concerns have also raised questions about possible regulatory hurdles for AI companies, particularly as the expansion of data centers faces increasing public scrutiny.
