OpenAI seems to be in trouble with news outlets yet again, and this time it’s the Indian media that is coming after the AI giant. Reportedly, digital news units of Indian billionaires Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, and other outlets including the Indian Express and the Hindustan Times, are joining proceedings against OpenAI for improperly using copyright content, legal papers show.

OpenAI has been mired in legal controversy for a long time when it comes to copyrighted content. In January, 2024, The New York Times took legal action against OpenAI, filing a lawsuit against the company. The lawsuit stems from concerns that OpenAI used its content without permission to train its AI models, particularly GPT-3 and GPT-4. NYT claims that OpenAI scraped articles from its website without compensating the publication or obtaining proper licensing, violating its copyright.
ChatGPT has been skirting the copyright issue for a while now, with complaints from creatives like authors, musicians, and news organisations falling on seemingly deaf ears. And now these entities are taking their grievances to the global courts.
OpenAI seeks to get a foothold in the Indian market. Reportedly, India has more than 690 million smartphone users thanks to cheap mobile data plans and OpenAI has previously said that the country is a critical market.
The lawsuit was filed by several major Indian media organizations, including the Indian Express, Hindustan Times, Adani’s NDTV, and the DNPA. The DNPA represents around 20 companies, such as Mukesh Ambani’s Network18, along with popular outlets like Dainik Bhaskar, Zee News, India Today Group, and The Hindu. Many of these organizations run successful newspapers and TV news channels as well.
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research organization founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, and Wojciech Zaremba. Its mission is to ensure that AI benefits all of humanity.

Initially founded as a non-profit, OpenAI later transitioned to a “capped-profit” model to attract investment for research and development.
