Indiana University has elevated Rahul Shrivastav, an Indian American distinguished scholar in speech and hearing sciences, current provost of IU Bloomington, to a university-wide role as interim vice president for student success.
With Shrivastav’s appointment, John Ciorciari, dean of the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, will step into the role of interim provost at IU Bloomington, the university announced.
“Rahul and John are trusted, experienced leaders who care deeply about Indiana University and the people who make this place exceptional,” university president Pamela Whitten said. “These interim appointments allow us to move forward with clarity and confidence, keeping students at the center of our work and maintaining strong academic leadership at IU Bloomington.”

“Across IU, we’re here to ensure every student has an exceptional experience,” Shrivastav said. “This role is about making sure our systems, policies and daily practices come together in ways that genuinely support students and keep them moving confidently toward graduation and beyond. I’m grateful for the chance to advance this vital work alongside colleagues across IU.”
Under Shrivastav’s leadership as provost, IU Bloomington has seen record enrollment and applications, the creation of 25 new academic programs and the recruitment of dozens of leading faculty.
Shrivastav has also guided efforts to modernize teaching and research facilities, establish interdisciplinary research groups, expand experiential learning and spark innovative partnerships with industry.
Shrivastav has a PhD in Speech & Hearing Sciences Indiana University Bloomington and a master’s degree in the same subject from University of Mysore, India.

Before joining Indiana University, he served as vice president for instruction at the University of Georgia, overseeing undergraduate education and instructional innovation while advancing initiatives to improve retention and graduation rates.
Prior to that he was professor and chair of the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders and directed the Voice and Speech Laboratory at Michigan State University. The National Academy of Inventors elected him as a fellow in 2020.
A distinguished scholar in speech and hearing sciences, Shrivastav has authored over 200 publications and presentations, contributed more than 20 invention disclosures with 10 awarded patents, and co-founded a startup that translated speech technologies into real-world applications.
Throughout his career, he has secured more than $15 million in research funding from NIH, VA, and other federal agencies, advancing healthcare technology and rehabilitation science worldwide.
