An Indian national has just become one of the highest priority captures of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with a $1 million reward on their head. The FBI has raised the reward to up to $1,000,000 for information that leads to the arrest of Bhadreshkumar Chetanbhai Patel, a fugitive on its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.
The case of Chetanbhai Patel revolves around the 2015 murder of his wife, Palak Patel, at a Dunkin’ Donuts store in Hanover, Maryland. On the night of April 12, 2015, Patel allegedly struck and stabbed Palak multiple times in a back room, resulting in her death. Following the attack, he fled the scene, reportedly returning briefly to the couple’s nearby apartment to collect personal items and cash before taking a taxi to a hotel near Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

His last confirmed sighting was at Newark Penn Station, after which he disappeared. Law enforcement considers him armed and dangerous, and his whereabouts remain unknown despite extensive searches.
Due to the severity of the crime and the challenges in locating him, Patel was added to the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list on April 18, 2017. The charges he faces include first- and second-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. The FBI has emphasized the public’s assistance in locating him, offering a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to his capture, reflecting the serious threat he poses and the ongoing decade-long manhunt.
“We hope this $1 million reward attracts greater attention to our tireless search for Bhadreshkumar Patel and leads to tips we need to provide justice for Palak Patel,” said FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge Jimmy Paul. The agent added: “The increased reward reflects the seriousness of Patel’s crime and all the cases on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.”
Patel’s case highlights the complexities of fugitive investigations in the modern era, including cross-state and potentially international evasion. He may be hiding in the U.S. or abroad, including possible locations such as Canada or India, although this has not been confirmed. Despite years of efforts, he has successfully avoided capture, highlighting both the challenges of tracking fugitives who may move between multiple jurisdictions and the critical role of public tips in resolving such cases. The FBI continues to actively pursue leads, underscoring the importance of vigilance in cases of violent crime and ongoing fugitive investigations.

High-profile cases like this also highlight the psychological and social dimensions of criminal investigations. Rewards and public appeals serve not only as incentives but also as tools to maintain public awareness and engagement, ensuring that fugitives remain visible in the collective consciousness. They reinforce the principle that justice is a collaborative effort between authorities and the community, particularly in cases where the suspect’s movements are unpredictable and potentially global.
Moreover, the extended duration of such manhunts demonstrates the resilience and dedication required from investigative teams. Every lead, tip, or piece of evidence can be pivotal, emphasizing the need for meticulous record-keeping, cross-agency communication, and adaptability in response strategies.
