Every few months I come across another story about artificial intelligence companies hiring philosophers. Not ethicists, not compliance officers, but philosophers. At first glance it seems almost counterintuitive. Artificial intelligence was built by engineers, mathematicians, and computer scientists, so why would some of the world’s most advanced AI companies suddenly place such a high value on philosophy? The answer, I believe, is that artificial intelligence has reached an important inflection point.
We have become remarkably good at teaching machines to process information, recognize patterns, and generate answers. The next challenge is something altogether different. We are trying to teach machines to reason. Once the discussion shifts from computation to judgment, from prediction to understanding, and from information to wisdom, we have left the world of engineering and entered the world of philosophy.
That is why I believe India’s greatest contribution to artificial intelligence may not be another engineer, another programmer, or another technology company. It may be Vedanta.
The word Veda literally means knowledge, but the Vedas are far more than collections of ancient religious writings. The Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda represent one of humanity’s earliest attempts to understand not simply the external universe, but the human mind itself.

Through the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and later the writings of Adi Shankaracharya, this tradition evolved into Vedanta, a philosophy that asks questions remarkably similar to those confronting artificial intelligence today. What is intelligence? What is consciousness? How do we distinguish truth from appearance? Why does judgment fail? Can knowledge exist without wisdom? Those questions are no longer confined to philosophy departments. They have become engineering problems.
Consider the problem of AI hallucinations. Most discussions focus on the technology, the training data, or the architecture of the model. I would argue that hallucinations expose an equally important human problem. Large language models produce responses that are fluent, articulate, and often correct, but our instinct is to accept those responses because they sound authoritative. The challenge is no longer whether AI occasionally invents information. The challenge is whether we have preserved our own ability to distinguish what is true from what merely sounds convincing.
Vedanta has a name for that ability. It is called viveka.
Viveka is commonly translated as discernment, but that definition barely captures its significance. It is the disciplined ability to distinguish the real from the unreal, the essential from the incidental, and truth from appearance. Thousands of years ago this principle was intended to guide individuals through the complexities of human existence. Today it describes perhaps the single most important skill required to use artificial intelligence responsibly. Every prompt demands discernment. Every response requires evaluation. Every conclusion should be questioned before it is accepted. Artificial intelligence does not eliminate the need for critical thinking. It amplifies it.

The companion principle is vairagya, or detachment. Again, this is frequently misunderstood. Detachment is not indifference. It is freedom from the emotional impulses that distort judgment. Artificial intelligence has introduced an entirely new form of cognitive temptation. Every question receives an immediate answer. Every problem appears solvable within seconds. The convenience is extraordinary, but convenience also encourages dependency. We begin accepting answers without reflection because reflection slows us down. Vairagya reminds us to create space between receiving information and believing it. That space, however brief, may become one of the defining cognitive skills of the AI era.
Vedanta offers another concept that deserves equal attention.
Maya is often translated as illusion, but a better description would be cognitive distortion. Maya is what happens when our perception of reality becomes clouded by fear, ambition, attachment, anxiety, or expectation. Modern psychology has developed an extensive vocabulary for describing these phenomena through cognitive bias, confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, and emotional decision making. Vedanta described essentially the same human tendencies thousands of years earlier, organizing them through the three gunas. Rajas reflects restless activity and emotional intensity. Tamas reflects inertia and confusion. Sattva represents clarity, balance, and wisdom. These are not merely philosophical abstractions. They are recognizable states of mind that influence every decision we make.
They also influence every interaction we have with artificial intelligence.
Two physicians can ask AI to interpret the same clinical scenario and arrive at different conclusions because they approach the information with different assumptions. Two attorneys can receive the same legal analysis and focus on entirely different aspects of the response. Two executives can review the same market data and make opposite strategic decisions. The machine has not changed. The human mind interpreting the output has. That observation may prove to be one of the most overlooked aspects of artificial intelligence. AI is not simply transforming knowledge. It is amplifying human cognition, with all of its strengths and all of its weaknesses.

This has profound implications for the future of AI. Much of today’s debate revolves around machine consciousness. Can artificial intelligence eventually become conscious? I am increasingly convinced that this is not the first question we should answer. Before we ask whether machines can become conscious, we should ask whether they can become discerning. Can they recognize uncertainty instead of manufacturing confidence? Can they distinguish evidence from probability? Can they identify when context changes meaning? Can they acknowledge what they do not know? Those capabilities may ultimately prove more valuable than consciousness itself because they define trustworthy reasoning.
Perhaps the next frontier in artificial intelligence is not artificial consciousness.
It is artificial discernment.
If that proves to be true, India’s oldest philosophical tradition may become one of the newest frameworks for thinking about intelligent systems. For decades India has exported engineers who helped build the digital economy. The next contribution may be something far more enduring. Long before humanity attempted to build intelligent machines, India’s sages devoted centuries to understanding intelligence itself. They studied perception before neuroscience, cognition before psychology, and consciousness before computer science. Those ideas have survived for thousands of years because they address questions that every generation eventually asks.
Artificial intelligence has simply given us a new reason to ask them again.
