Amid an unpopular war, Trump remains focused on a few beautiful things
Call it hindsight, foresight or whatever, Donald Trump has a clear 20/20 vision — only it’s laser focused on the 2020 election that he insists “Sleepy Joe” Biden ‘stole’ from him — and a few big beautiful things.
As his prime time spiel sowing doubts about the American election system gained little traction even among his Republican supporters fearing a rout in the November midterms amid an unpopular war and a growing affordability crisis, the president feigned indifference.
Even as a fly on the wall media report suggested that Trump’s frustrations over an unending Iran war had sent him into ‘revenge mode,’ Trump claimed the war’s mounting death toll and surging costs — put at $37.5 billion so far by the Pentagon — “won’t have any impact on me.”
“Probably. It won’t have any impact on me. I’m just going to do the right thing,” he told reporters blandly when asked if Iran is trying to affect the midterm elections by threatening the strait of Hormuz.

“I think people are very impressed,” said Trump even as a new Washington Post-Ipsos poll found that just 28% of Americans believe Iran war was worth fighting and only 29% think America’s leadership in the world has strengthened under him. Amid surging prices linked to the Iran war, just 17% of Americans said they were better off financially than they were when Trump became president.
Yet an unmindful Trump threatened to “bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT, including those located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran,” any time Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a farfetched oranges to apples comparison table, he touted ‘0 DEAD in 1 day ‘Venezuela War’ and 18 DEAD in 4 months of ‘Iran Military Conflict’ as against 58,220 DEAD in Vietnam War lasting 19 years and 5 months and 36,574 DEAD in Korean War over 3 years and 1 month.
And as the House approved a non-binding proposal to end the Iran war, with four Republicans joining all Democrats to restrain him, the Senate came to his rescue rejecting a binding joint resolution, though subject to a presidential veto.
Even as several Republicans agreed the war cannot go on for more than 60 days without congressional approval, they used a novel stratagem to turn the clock back.
The 60-day clock started ticking not on February 28, but on July 10, suggested Republican senator Thom Tillis, “the first time I heard anyone in the administration refer to it as a war.”

Then after going to war with Iran supposedly with the avowed goal of preventing it from building bombs with its nuclear energy program, Trump signed a nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia with major concessions.
And as experts suggested that such a deal could jeopardise talks with Tehran, Trump threw a new spanner in the works insisting the kingdom must first establish diplomatic ties with Israel.
In a Truth Social post, Trump also claimed the landmark deal does not allow the enrichment of uranium as it “pertains only to non-military use such as the ones that Iran and UAE (and others) already have.”
Then opening a new front, Trump ordered a fresh round of tariffs on more than 80 countries including Canada, Australia, India, China and the 27 countries that make up the European Union. New tariffs will replace the blanket 10% tariff that Trump imposed in February, right after the Supreme Court declared many of his earlier tariffs illegal.
The latest attempt to reignite a trade war using a law aimed against countries that engage in forced labor despite challenges from the apex court, provoked a wave of criticism and protests from U.S. allies and major trading partners.
The new tariffs came shortly after he announced that after two years ‘TARIFF’ on all generic drugs “will be raised to 100% for a one year period of time, and 200% thereafter… in order to RESHORE Generic Pharmaceutical Production into America.”

But the U.S. Justice Department was forced to withdraw subpoenas for New York Times journalists who had reported on the security capabilities of Trump’s new $4oo million ‘palace in the sky.’
As the decision came after a federal judge raised questions about the subpoenas, which The Times said were designed to intimidate the media, Trump claimed the new Air Force One was being taken out of service to be “maxed out.”
Other than 2020 and tariffs, Trump remained transfixed on making Washington beautiful again with loads of pictures of spruced up monuments in the capital and reshaping the White House in his image.
In the latest additions, he planted a maple tree and installed a statue of Thomas Jefferson seated with a draft of the Declaration of Independence in the Rose Garden.
Meanwhile, Trump memes flooded the internet after he lingered on stage during Spain’s trophy celebrations after the World Cup final in New York, ignoring FIFA president’s attempts to usher him aside to let the team pose for their victory photo.

The awkward moment quickly went viral, spawning a flood of memes imagining Trump popping up everywhere– from iconic historical moments and famous movie scenes to classic pop culture images.
Trump bared his longing to linger longer yet again at the rescheduled White House correspondents’ dinner where he again accused journalists of producing “fake news” as he hurled insults at his political enemies. “I won three times, now I’m going to do it again,” the president said, sarcastically, placing a red “Trump 2028” hat on his head.
The speech he had originally prepared was “gonna be a doozy,” claimed Trump suggesting he had pared back his attacks at the rescheduled event. “Just like my presidency, the second time is always better – and the third time will be better yet … I’m only kidding.”
Was he? May his longing to linger, linger the longest!
