Google has had a tough year and it looks like 2025 may not be much better. Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai told employees last week that “the stakes are high” for 2025, as the company faces increased competition, regulatory hurdles, and contends with rapid advancements in artificial intelligence.
CNBC obtained an audio of a 2025 strategy meeting on Dec. 18, 2024, where Pichai and other Google leaders were reportedly hyping up the new year.
“I think 2025 will be critical,” Pichai said. “I think it’s really important we internalize the urgency of this moment, and need to move faster as a company. The stakes are high. These are disruptive moments. In 2025, we need to be relentlessly focused on unlocking the benefits of this technology and solve real user problems.”

Google is currently facing multiple legal challenges from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) over antitrust concerns. These lawsuits primarily target Google’s dominance in search engines, online advertising, and mobile operating systems, particularly Android.
One of the key legal issues involves Google’s search engine dominance. The DOJ has accused Google of engaging in anti-competitive practices by entering into exclusivity agreements with device manufacturers and browsers, effectively preventing competitors from gaining market share. This is seen as an attempt to maintain Google’s near-monopoly over online search and advertising.
Another significant issue that has tainted Google’s image is its control over the Android ecosystem. The DOJ has raised concerns that Google uses its Android operating system to lock out competitors, preventing rivals from offering alternatives or competing on equal footing in the mobile market.
Additionally, Google’s dominance in digital advertising has drawn scrutiny. The DOJ alleges that the company controls both the ad-buying and ad-selling processes, distorting competition by limiting the ability of rival companies to participate in the market fairly.

These legal battles are crucial in determining the future of Google’s business practices and the level of competition in the tech industry. The outcomes of these cases could reshape the digital landscape and impact how dominant tech companies are regulated in the U.S.
Ironically, the tech giant posted record breaking earnings in 2024 which pushed its market cap over $2 trillion, and yet employees were not sufficiently compensated for their efforts.
Some employees attended the meeting in person at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, while others tuned in virtually.
2025 will be the year to watch Google closely and see how it manages to navigate the challenges it might be facing.
