Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal criticized current immigration enforcement efforts in a social media post this week, saying immigrant families across the United States are experiencing fear and uncertainty as deportation actions continue.
Jayapal, representing Washington’s 7th Congressional District, reflected on her own immigration story while defending immigrants seeking better opportunities in the United States.

In a post shared on X, she said she immigrated to the country, became a U.S. citizen and then was elected to Congress all because she never stopped chasing her dream and highlighted that she will never stop fighting for those who move to the U.S. chasing something better.
The congresswoman said families in her district and around the country are living in “terror” over “immigration enforcement.” She explained how children going to school are unsure whether their parents would still be home when they returned.
Jayapal argued the situation about more than just standard immigration enforcement, labelling it as a campaign of fear directed at “communities of color.” The statement reflects her opinion and political stance on immigration policy.
Immigration has remained one of the most contentious political issues in the United States, with sharp disagreements between Democrats and Republicans over border security, deportations and pathways to citizenship. Progressive lawmakers and immigrant advocacy groups have frequently criticized aggressive deportation measures, while supporters of stricter enforcement argue such actions are necessary to uphold immigration laws and secure the border.
Born in Chennai, India, Jayapal moved to the United States as a teenager and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000. She represented the Seattle-area district in Congress since 2017 and previously worked as an immigrant rights activist before entering politics.

Jayapal has always been a vocal advocate for immigration reform. During her time in Congress, she had supported legislation creating pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and protections for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Her latest comments quickly sparked reactions online from supporters praising her defense of immigrant communities and critics who argued federal authorities are enforcing existing law.
The debate over immigration policy is expected to remain a major issue heading into the 2026 election cycle as lawmakers continue negotiating border security funding, asylum policies and broader immigration reform proposals in Congress.
