Meta Platforms on Wednesday launched public developer access to Muse Spark 1.1, an upgraded version of its flagship artificial intelligence model. The social media giant steps up efforts to compete with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in the rapidly evolving AI market.
The company opened a public preview of its new Meta Model API, allowing U.S. developers to build applications using Muse Spark 1.1. New users will receive $20 in free credits before moving to a paid pricing model, with Meta charging $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens.
Muse Spark 1.1 is designed to handle coding, debugging, document analysis, image and video understanding, and complex multi-step tasks with minimal human intervention. The model represents a significant upgrade over the original Muse Spark introduced in April and is aimed at enterprise developers building AI-powered applications.

The launch marks Meta’s latest effort to regain ground in the artificial intelligence race after aggressively investing in its Superintelligence Labs division under CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The company has been expanding its AI capabilities following increased competition from OpenAI’s GPT models and Anthropic’s Claude family of AI assistants.
Meta said Muse Spark 1.1 powers the “thinking mode” available through its AI app and website and will eventually replace Llama models across Meta’s AI experiences on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and its AI-enabled smart glasses.
The developer rollout also signals a shift in Meta’s AI strategy. While the company built its recent reputation on releasing open-source Llama models, Muse Spark 1.1 is being offered through a commercial API with usage-based pricing, bringing Meta closer to the business models adopted by OpenAI and Anthropic.

Zuckerberg has emphasized making advanced multimodal AI more affordable while expanding its availability across Meta’s products. The company expects developers to use Muse Spark 1.1 to build AI agents capable of performing sophisticated reasoning, software development and enterprise workflows.
The release follows Meta’s recent introduction of Muse Image, its latest AI image-generation model, as the company continues to broaden its portfolio of AI products. Industry analysts view the developer launch as a key milestone in Meta’s effort to establish itself as a leading provider of foundation models for both consumers and businesses.
