Academy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan, along with actors Tom Holland and Matt Damon, made an unannounced stop at a Mumbai café for tea during their visit to India. This left employees unaware they had just served some of Hollywood’s biggest names until after the trio had left.
The visit took place while Nolan and his team were in India for the premiere of The Odyssey, the director’s upcoming adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. According to café staff, the group ordered chai and spent time at the establishment without attracting much attention. It was only later, after seeing news reports and searching online, that employees realized who their customers had been. “Baad mein Google kiya” (“We Googled them later”), one staff member said, recalling the surprise encounter.
According to reports, the group behaved like regular customers and did not seek any special treatment. The unexpected visit has generated excitement on social media, with fans praising the stars for embracing a quintessential Mumbai experience by stopping for a cup of cutting chai instead of visiting luxury venues.
Nolan has been in India in recent weeks as production continues on The Odyssey, one of the most anticipated Hollywood films currently in development. The epic features an ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.
Universal Pictures has described The Odyssey as Nolan’s adaptation of the ancient Greek epic following the long journey of Odysseus after the Trojan War. The film is expected to combine large-scale practical filmmaking with international locations, a hallmark of Nolan’s productions.
Mumbai has increasingly become a destination for international film productions, with several Hollywood studios choosing Indian locations for major projects. The city’s vibrant streets, historic architecture and distinctive culture have frequently appeared in international cinema.
For the café employees, however, the experience remained memorable for a simpler reason. What initially seemed like serving tea to ordinary foreign visitors turned into an encounter with one of Hollywood’s most celebrated directors and two of its biggest stars.
The visit has since become another example of how international celebrities often experience India away from the spotlight, with a simple cup of chai becoming the highlight of their stop in Mumbai.
