Brinshore Development LLC and Apna Ghar Inc. (Our Home), alongside public officials, community leaders, development partners and supporters, will celebrate the groundbreaking of a new permanent supportive housing development for survivors of gender-based and domestic violence on Friday, Oct. 30. The event will take place during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
According to a press release, the development will create 64 units of permanent supportive housing designed to provide survivors and their families with a foundation for healing, stability and long-term independence. Residents will have access to affordable housing paired with on-site support services provided by an organization with more than 35 years of experience serving survivors of gender-based and domestic violence.

“The Department of Housing is proud to have contributed $11.4 million to this crucial project, ensuring working-class Chicagoans can continue to have a place on Chicago’s North Side,” said Commissioner Castañeda. “It is imperative that residents at this development have a resource as vital as Apna Ghar’s services for survivors of gender-based violence in a building that is fully affordable.”
“Domestic Violence Awareness Month serves as an important reminder that safety and stability begin with access to housing,” said David Brint, co-founding principal at Brinshore Development. “We’re honored to make a meaningful investment in survivors and their families by creating a housing solution where individuals can rebuild their lives with dignity, support and opportunity.”
Located in Chicago’s North Center community area, the development will adaptively reuse a 1920s bank building acquired from Fifth Third Bank while adding a new residential building on the adjacent parcel. The former bank building will be repurposed as a space for community and supportive services, according to the release.
“Apna Ghar is honored to partner with Brinshore on this first-of-its-kind project for our area that will provide a powerful combination of housing, services and neighborhood amenities, reflecting a comprehensive approach to supporting survivors of gender-based violence as they pursue long-term stability,” said Neha Gill, executive director and CEO of Apna Ghar. “Residents will benefit from nearby transit, health care, jobs, education, child care and Apna Ghar’s main location. We thank the many partners who made this project possible.”
All 64 homes will receive project-based rental assistance from the Chicago Housing Authority, ensuring long-term affordability for residents. The project was made possible through collaboration among numerous public and private partners.
The groundbreaking comes months after Apna Ghar celebrated its 35th anniversary with a gala. The organization grew from a single crisis line into a nonprofit offering a range of services, including emergency and transitional housing, legal and medical advocacy, and economic empowerment programs.

The organization says it has served more than 100,000 community members from over 50 countries, with a team that speaks more than 20 languages.
Friday’s event by Apna Ghar will be held at 3959 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago.
