Noted ENT surgeon Dr. Srinivas (Bobby) Mukkamala has been elected President of the American Medical Association (AMA), the first person of Indian heritage to hold the top position in its 178-year history.
Known for his clinical excellence, leadership in organized medicine, and committed community service, Dr. Mukkamala’s election reflects the increasing influence and invaluable contributions of Indian American physicians within the U.S. healthcare system, according to a media release.
Born in 1971 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Mukkamala is the son of Drs. Apparao and Sumathi Mukkamala, physicians who immigrated from Andhra Pradesh, India, in 1970. His father is from Budhavaram and his mother from Thotlavalluru, both villages in Krishna district. Raised with strong values of medical service and philanthropy, Dr. Mukkamala now serves as a beacon of pride for the Indian diaspora.

Dr. Mukkamala, who practices in Flint, Michigan has received numerous public service awards recognizing his dedication to community health, leadership, and advocacy. These honors underscore his commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes, particularly in underserved populations.
His distinguished record in both clinical excellence and public service highlights the impact he has made locally in Flint and nationally across the United States.
He has championed initiatives addressing physician burnout, equitable healthcare access, and opioid misuse prevention. His tenure as Chair of the AMA Board of Trustees and advocacy for diversity in medicine further demonstrate his commitment to advancing the profession and mentoring future generations.
Dr. Mukkamala’s wife, Dr. Nita Kulkarni, is also a respected physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. She, too, is actively involved in the American Medical Association and organized medicine. Together, they form a remarkable team dedicated to advancing medical care and professional leadership, serving as role models for aspiring healthcare professionals.
The AMA, established in 1847, is the largest and most influential association of physicians and medical students in the United States, shaping healthcare policy and advocating for physician well-being with over 270,000 members.
