It looks like President Donald Trump may be extending an olive branch to India during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. Trump has called Modi to wish him happy birthday after weeks of tension over trade tariffs.
Tensions between the two countries have been escalating in recent weeks, thanks in no small part to Trump. The phone call on Wednesday, a day before Modi turns 75, is seen as a sign of thawing ties and followed talks between the two sides on reaching a trade agreement, which both sides called “positive.”
Trade relations between India and the United States have become increasingly strained due to escalating tariffs and reciprocal trade measures. The U.S. government, citing trade imbalances and India’s relatively high tariff rates on American goods, imposed a significant 50% tariff on a broad range of Indian imports. This move targets key Indian export sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and auto components, which are vital to India’s economy and employment.

In retaliation, India has maintained tariffs on U.S. products, creating a tit-for-tat dynamic that has led to a marked decline in bilateral trade volumes. These tariffs have disrupted supply chains and heightened uncertainty for businesses on both sides, intensifying economic tensions between the two democracies.
Trump posted later on X saying Modi was doing a “tremendous job” and thanked him for support on “ending the Russia-Ukraine war.” Modi called him a “friend” and said the two were “committed” to taking their partnership to new heights, it was the first call between the two since the U.S. imposed punishing tariffs on India last month for purchasing Russian oil.
This recent exchange between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi signals a cautious but important thaw in the escalating trade tensions between India and the United States.
On Tuesday, a team led by U.S. trade negotiator Brendan Lynch held talks in Delhi with officials from India’s commerce ministry.

While the imposition of hefty tariffs on Indian goods had strained economic ties and disrupted trade flows, the personal outreach and positive rhetoric from both leaders suggest a willingness to explore diplomatic avenues and negotiate a more balanced trade relationship.
For India, this moment presents an opportunity to protect key export sectors while seeking greater market access and easing of tariffs that have hurt industries like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and auto components. It also underscores India’s strategic importance as a partner amid broader geopolitical shifts, particularly regarding Russia and global security concerns.
For the U.S., the outreach reflects a recognition of India’s growing role on the world stage and the need for cooperation beyond tariffs and trade disputes. Trump’s appreciation of Modi’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict highlights how economic issues are intertwined with geopolitical alliances.
