What this means for the franchise is anyone’s guess, as the streaming giant has not had an impressive run with other IP franchises, most noticeably The Lord of the Rings franchise which had a divisive reception among fans and was not commercially as successful as previous installments of the franchise.
Amazon now has complete creative control with Broccoli taking a step back, which means Amazon MGM has free reign to do whatever it pleases with James Bond. Given their track record of handling properties they paid big bucks for, the takeover should give fans pause.
Reportedly, Amazon originally paid an astounding $8.5 billion dollars for MGM, the studio that was apparently valued at $3.5 to $4 billion. The deal was initially thought to include the James Bond franchise, but it did not. The streaming giant had to shell out an additional $1 billion to access the 007 franchise. After almost sixty years, Broccoli will not be at the helm of a James Bond production but rather an advisory role.
The James Bond film franchise is one of the longest-running and most iconic in cinema history, debuting in 1962 with “Dr. No.” Based on the spy novels by Ian Fleming, the series follows the exploits of British MI6 agent 007, known for his suave demeanor, deadly skills, and affinity for gadgets. Bond’s mission: to thwart global threats from villains seeking world domination or chaos.

Over the years, the role of Bond has been portrayed by several actors, including Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, each bringing a unique flavor to the character. The films combine action, espionage, thrilling chases, and sophisticated plots, often featuring larger-than-life antagonists, exotic locations, and Bond’s trademark car, the Aston Martin.
The franchise spans 25 official films (as of 2025), with “No Time to Die” (2021) being the latest entry. Bond remains a symbol of both British culture and global cinema influence.
