As AI reshapes our world, Krüger’s vision is clear: technology must enhance and not eclipse, the human experience

In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, Professor Antonio Krüger offers a vital reminder: technology should serve people—not the other way around. He envisions a future where technology doesn’t dictate human behavior but enhances it.

Rather than expecting users to conform to the rigid logic of machines, this approach designs AI to fit seamlessly into human lives. He firmly believe in the concept where we need AI that adapts to us, not the other way around. That means intuitive interfaces, ethical design principles, and regulatory frameworks that prioritize human dignity, safety, and wellbeing.

Krüger, a leading researcher in human-computer interaction, is also a keen observer of the regulatory landscape. He unpacked the concept of human-centered AI—a philosophy that prioritizes user needs over technological demands. “We are developing AI tools that are meant to support humans,” he said, emphasizing a shift from control to oversight in how we interact with AI.
One of the most significant shifts in recent years, he argues, is embodied in the European Union’s AI Act. The Act doesn’t regulate the technology itself, but how it is used—a crucial distinction. By classifying AI applications into different risk categories, from minimal to unacceptable, the Act ensures that high-risk technologies undergo more rigorous scrutiny. This approach, Krüger notes, helps strike a balance between innovation and safety.
The Act also reflects global concerns about AI’s societal impact, particularly on jobs. Contrary to dystopian fears of mass unemployment, Krüger predicts a transformation, not elimination, of roles. He explained how AI will redefine job descriptions, citing increased productivity that could require fewer workers for the same tasks. A McKinsey report supports this, suggesting full AI integration might not occur until 2030, giving industries time to adapt. For aging societies like Germany and China, AI could address labor shortages, particularly in administrative roles, ensuring services remain robust despite demographic shifts.
But regulation isn’t just about constraints. It’s about building trust both in the technology and in the institutions overseeing it. To do that, he advocates for neutral auditing bodies and transparent design processes, especially in high-stakes areas like healthcare, finance, and law enforcement.

As AI becomes more embedded in our daily lives, from smart assistants to hiring algorithms, these checks will be vital. Still, the integration of AI is not without disruption especially in the labor market. Krüger resists alarmist predictions of mass job losses. Instead, he envisions a transformation of work: fewer people doing routine tasks, more people focusing on creative, supervisory, or strategic roles. Krüger believes AI will reshape job roles rather than replace workers, helping address labor shortages in by boosting efficiency and adapting to demographic shifts.
Part of the podcast delves into the evolving way people are engaging with AI. Krüger envisions a future shaped by multimodal interfaces that respond to voice, touch, and bodily signals, shifting our interaction from direct control to collaborative oversight. As AI grows more responsive and intuitive, it increasingly resembles a partner rather than a mere tool. Yet, this progression raises ethical concerns. With technologies like neural links and emotion-recognition entering sensitive areas such as education, caregiving, and mental health, the boundary between helpful support and invasive intrusion becomes unclear, demanding thoughtful, culturally aware, and ethically grounded integration.
Language and cultural representation in AI also raise pressing concerns. Most foundational models are trained predominantly in English, risking the erasure of smaller languages and cultures. He points to encouraging experiments in retraining models on diverse linguistic datasets, which have not only preserved cultural nuance but also improved overall performance. As nations grapple with AI’s global implications, he believes that international cooperation through platforms like the OECD will be essential. Only through shared standards and collective oversight can we mitigate dangers like misinformation, deep fakes, and algorithmic bias.
